The hot summer air and sun can wreak havoc on your hair, especially if you’ve been hitting the pool or the beach to escape the heat. As the weather changes, the cooler air can suck moisture from your locks, increase frizz, and cause more split ends. Here are our top 5 restorative tips for healthy hair this autumn.
1. Get a trim
Book your next trim at the start of autumn to remove any damaged strands or split ends. Longer tresses may need a little more love: ask your local salon about moisture-locking treatments they can provide for an extra boost.
2. Use A Treatment Mask
As well as regularly using a good conditioner for your hair type, consider adding a weekly mask to restore and retain moisture and shine. We like the Masque Force Architecte Hair Mask from Kérastase, as it not only prevents breakage, but actively detangles hair and leaves it silky smooth.
3. Prevent Split Ends And Hair Stress
Swapping to a genuine silk pillowcase prevents hair getting snagged on cotton’s coarser fibres, resulting in smoother, less frizzy hair. Similarly, after washing, pat your hair dry with a microfibre towel (or hair wrap) or old t shirt, instead of rubbing with a rougher cotton bath towel.
4. Invest In Good Styling Products
If you’re prone to frizz, grab a good quality hair oil to help as the weather and humidity changes. We tend to use more heat to style our hair in the colder months, so try to keep straightening to a minimum to avoid further moisture loss. If you do use heat to style your hair, always use professional grade heat protectant sprays and finish with a serum.
5. Keep Your Hair Down
Natural hair shedding happens faster during warmer months and wearing your hair up can speed this up even more. As the weather cools, and your hair gets drier, tying your hair up in a pony or bun can cause more breakage. Wear your hair down or gently pinned, and if you’re worried about it looking greasy, freshen up with a spritz of dry shampoo in between washes.
