A place that changes you. What you see here, changes how you see things out there
Immerse yourself in a world of awe-inspiring geysers, bubbling mud pools, and pristine native forest, all expertly unveiled through our personalised guided tours.
Encounter the Southern Hemisphere’s largest natural geyser, Pōhutu, which naturally erupts skyward sometimes reaching heights of 30 metres (100 feet) over 17 times a day.
This is New Zealand’s most active geyser and is a sight to behold. Pōhutu means ‘constant splashing’ in Māori.
Heart of Māori Culture
At Te Puia, not only will you witness the earth’s raw power, but you’ll also delve into the heart of Māori culture at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute.
This place has a significant legacy recognising 60 years of history. Watch skilled wood, stone and bone carvers and flax weavers demonstrate their expertise. Indigenous culture is on display through the lens of internationally recognised artists.
You can take the experience to another level by seeing a cultural performance – these happen daily inside a traditionally carved meeting house (wharenui).
There’s something incredibly special about the feeling you get as you take in the traditional welcome ceremony, songs, chants, poi, and haka. You can also check out the cutting-edge Kiwi Conservation Centre, a haven dedicated to New Zealand’s beloved national treasure: the native Kiwi bird.
Pātaka Kai Restaurant
Experience breathtaking views of the magnificent Te Whakarewarewa geothermal valley when you dine at Pātaka Kai. Choose a table on our balcony or sit indoors with floor-to-ceiling glass windows so you can see the geyser erupt as you dine.
Savour Māori-Inspired Dishes
Featuring locally sourced produce in a hāngi feast, this includes mussels and succulent roast lamb. Whether your morning coffee fix needs to be full-bodied, aromatic, or mellow our baristas at the Cafe will craft a delicious cup just for you…. and of course, that will pair perfectly with freshly baked muffins, scones, and other delectable treats made on-site.
