Waikato River Float

I love spending summer days in the water, but being the not-so-confident swimmer that I am, finding an easy or relaxed water activity that I can enjoy can be difficult.
Recently, I found out about the river float, where basically, you can just lay back, dip your toes in the water and let the river do the rest, i.e. take you on a cruise past cliff faces, native forest, pumice gorge and various islands. Best of all, you can do it on our very own Waikato River.
All you need is a floatation device – paddle board, ski biscuit, floating tube, inflatable mattress – anything that floats (and a life jacket if you’re not a confident swimmer like me). You don’t even need any experience, it’s perfect for beginners, families, couples, friends or even alone.
Keen? Here’s what you need to know:
Enter the river from Pois Road, and jump straight in. The slow-moving waters of the Waikato River are gentle enough to drift you along at an easy pace, or you can paddle through for more speed. It’s an awesome way to see Taupo at its best – raw and natural. You’ll be amazed by how different a new perspective can look. Don’t miss the chance to take a dip when you pass the islands and swimming spots, and watch people bungy too at the bungy platform.
It can take from around 30 minutes (non-stop) or longer if you take breaks for swims, snacks, or just to enjoy the view.
The recommended end point is Reids Farm, but you can also stop at Spa Park if you want to soak in the hot pools to end your trip (or you could take a soak enroute).
Tips
- Take 2 cars – park one at your preferred end point first then take the other to the entrance point on Pois Road, that way you’ll have one to drive you back when you finish.
- Wear sunscreen – this one is simple, and obvious.
- Bring water and snacks – you’ll need to stay hydrated and energised to keep you going.
- Bring ziplock bags – for storing your phone, ID, car keys and cash, and to avoid getting them wet.
- Leave your valuables at home – e.g. those expensive sunglasses, if it falls in the river, it’s as good as gone.
If you’re staying in Taupo this summer, or have visitors around, make the most of where we live and tick the Waikato River float off your summer bucket list!
