River Wild Raft N Run Race
Looking for a team event that’s outside the box? Rafting New Zealand’s River Wild Raft N Run Race takes group bonding, building and orienteering to the next level.
The annual November occasion, now in its eighth year, sees participants traverse the stunning Tongariro River on raft, then run – or walk – a section of the Tongariro River Trail. You can be as competitive or non-competitive as you like – no experience required – workmates, friends or family all welcome!
“Over the years the River Wild Challenge has sold out on the Saturday so this year we have opened up a second day on the Sunday. It’s a real testament to how popular this event has become,” explains Pianika Boddington of Rafting New Zealand. “You get to experience the Tongariro River in all its glory – the challenge of tumbling rapids and prisitine scenery – plus, you’ll run/walk through some of the most beautiful bush. The location is so accessible. Most people drive past, having never visited the area, and then come back to compete or sightsee again!”
What can we expect on the day?
Teams of five or six gear up riverside for the race which begins just south of Turangi. Teams enter the water in one-minute intervals and raft 16 kilometres down the exhilarating Tongariro River over 60 Grade 3+ rapids – no rafting experience needed as the raft and professional guidance is supplied.
Once you reach Red Hut Bridge you drop your lifejackets, wetsuits and helmets and run 8 kilometres along the right-hand side of the Tongariro River Trail, finishing at Turangi Town Centre.
“It’s a super fun day out and it’s hosted by Karam Fletcher of Tuwharetoa FM – he’s a brilliant motivator and entertainer,” says Pianika. “At the end of the day we have massagers, hot dogs and a beer waiting for you – bliss!”
The impetus behind the inaugural event stemmed from a desire to create a group experience that wasn’t your typical, within a magic setting.
“The River Wild Challenge first began in 2011 because we wanted to create a corporate event that would bring people to the Tongariro River and Turangi,” enthuses Pianika. “It is not your normal event. It enables all abilities to get on one of New Zealand’s most beautiful rivers in one of the most stunning locations and experience rafting. It marks the start of our summer spell and is the first weekend back for returning river guides and staff – it set’s the season off with a bang!”
For a challenge that’s sure to entertain your adventurous spirit, grab your teammates, an overnight bag and give it a go, encourages Pianika. “I can guarantee you’ll be back the following year! Book in quick as there are only few spaces left!”
