Fall in love with Taupo this Autumn
It’s easy to take what we have for granted, so let Autumn be the season you fall in love with Taupo again – whether you need ideas for the upcoming school holidays, you’re hosting visitors, or you just need to get out of the house.
As Autumn’s cooler temperatures arrive, the visitor crowd thins and we have Taupo all to ourselves again. As the summer buzz fades, Autumn swoops in with a more tranquil, laid back style – and there is still plenty to do and enjoy.
Catch a trout
Have you done this yet? Did you know that Taupo’s world-famous trout are at their biggest size in Autumn? Plus, the waters are much emptier now, except for the few locals who know the secrets. If you’re new to the game, we recommend a fly-fishing guide. They’ll know all the great spots where you can catch that trout. There’s also fishing charters and boat hire options, great for fishing fun with friends, family or colleagues.
Soak those bones
Taupo boasts many hot pools, loved by both locals and visitors. Thanks to the geothermal activity happening underground, our pools are naturally heated. One of the most popular (and free) hot spots is the Otumuheke Stream at Spa Park, a great place to take a break and soak away in the shallow pools, get a soft massage under the waterfall or enjoy a riverside picnic with the family.
School holiday blues
If you’re having to entertain your little ones during the school holidays, did you know the Taupo Library has a holiday programme? If the weather isn’t playing ball, a trip to the library is a great respite for Mums and great fun for the kids, with changing activities each day. Best of all, it’s free. Outside of the school holidays, come in every Wednesday at 10.30am for ‘Toddler Time’, with stories, rhymes, crafts, songs and fun to keep your little ones entertained.
Beat the feet
Midday temperatures are down, so now’s a great time to discover Taupo’s many walkways, boasting natural beauty and spectacular views. Whether it’s your daily lakeside walk, you want to try something different, or even challenge yourself, ‘push play’ this Autumn and stay active.
