Just 45 minutes from Taupō, tucked away in the charming bays of Tokaanu, is a foodie’s delight, known to mainly the local residents of Turangi and its frequent winter visitors.

Lakeland House Restaurant is a favourite of many locals and visitors, offering a calm, scenic setting with cuisine that’s unmatched and unlike any other. You can enjoy the stunning views of Lake Taupo while dining for lunch or dinner, or even popping in for a coffee. It’s open 7 days, allowing you to be able to enjoy fine dining on any occasion.

No longer a hidden gem, the handy location right in the middle of Auckland and Wellington often sees visitors from both ends, whether they’re here for the ski season in winter, or bringing their boats in the summer.
The restaurant boasts a diverse menu made from high quality, fresh New Zealand produce and New Zealand beef and lamb. Not to mention a perfectly matched wine menu (you won’t find these in the supermarkets), and a new addition of handcrafted Tuatara beer on tap, along with a range of appetising drinks.

Functions and more

Weddings, parties and functions are better at Lakeland House with the restaurant’s prime lakefront position, great food, and remarkable service, letting you take in the most of this peaceful and tranquil setting. From small occasions to extravagant events, Lakeland House can cater for any number, offer packages and even special banquets tailored to your event. You can count on the team to set up and deliver a unique occasion just for you.

Meet the Head Chef

Francis Whitcombe, head chef at Lakeland House since 2005, took over the business with Natasha Whitcombe in 2010, and is loving putting his personality
into the restaurant and its cuisine.

Starting in the industry as an apprentice, Francis has gained experience working in many parts of the country, before moving to Turangi and starting at Lakeland House in 2005. He has a love for all things food, and is known for his generous portions, and great service, bringing customers back over and over again.

What are your strengths?

In terms of running the restaurant; leadership, being organised and being proactive. It can get really busy in some periods and during events, so I’ve learnt to juggle many tasks all at once and still create something great at the end.

What inspires your menu?

I try to include what I like, for example I love Thai food, and I’ve brought those flavours into a couple of the dishes.

What do the customers love?

The fresh snapper, seafood chowder, seafood teaser, lamb and venison. These have become the favourites and are often the most repeated orders.

What’s the most rewarding part of the job?

Seeing the restaurant succeed and grow every year. We have such loyal customers, some since we started in 2005, and new visitors who have just become fans. It feels so satisfying to see how my work makes a difference to someone’s holiday or night out.

Also, working here has become a social life for me, the staff feel like family. I love to see my team grow, learn and move on.
