Trout Fishing

Trout Fishing

There’s every reason to put trout fishing on your bucket list, because since moving to Taupo, I’ve discovered it’s not just me who’s never tried it. With this beautiful big lake on our doorstep, many of us ‘locals’ have never ventured out – so this one’s for people like me; never done it, don’t know how, and need some encouragement to jump in and try!

This is an especially good one for Autumn because our trout are at their biggest and the waters are so much emptier now that there are fewer visitors.

How to get started

If you’ve never trout fished before then the first thing to decide is boat fishing or fly fishing?

Before buying your own equipment and venturing out on your own, give it a go first with a fishing charter. That way you’ll learn from the experts about what’s involved, techniques, safety rules and everything else you didn’t realise you needed to know. Plus, all the fishing equipment is supplied. Boat fishing (with all the right gear) is a relaxing way to catch trout. Fly fishing (perfect for Autumn/Winter) can be just as relaxing, but it’s you in the river ‘stalking’ your trout – a professional guide will teach you the skill of casting the rod, getting it in the perfect spot so that you can land your trout. Hugely rewarding! With practice and guidance, you will feel much more confident on your own and be able to decide if you want to take your new hobby further.

If you prefer to go independent, I would still recommend getting some advice – easily available from local fishing or outdoor equipment shops.

What else do you need to know?

  • If you want to keep your catch, the minimum length is 40cm. Undersized fish have to go back.
  • Every angler must have a valid fishing licence – you can purchase this from your skipper or guide on the day, or local petrol stations or sports shops.

Top Spots

  • By boat: Mine Bay, Horomatangi Reef, Totara Bay, Western Bays
  • By river: Tongariro River, Waitahanui River, Hinemaiaia River, Waimarino River, Waiotaka River

Cook your catch

If you’re lucky enough to catch a trout, most restaurants in Taupo will happily cook it for you. Make sure you check with them in advance and have your fishing licence handy.

Convinced?

Try it, you’ll be hooked. If it’s not your next new hobby, a fishing charter is a great activity to do with friends, and most fly-fishing guides can take two to three people on a half or full day expedition.
